Knox baseball thrives in role of underdog to win MWC

Eighth-grader Josh Shragal captured a third place finish in the 100 with a time of 12.28 seconds, along with a ninth place effort in the 200 (25.05). Knoxville 4x100 eighth-grade relay team (Kenny Lee, Josh Shragal, Carsen Vancil and Brett Walker) finished fourth overall with a time of 49.11). David Carlson served as the alternate of the team.

On a blustery day last fall, just before sunset, I took a walk and found myself on the grounds of Hawthorne Center. A few stubborn leaves clung to the trees while their fallen brothers swirled around on the ground. I wandered back to places where streets used to be.

As I write to you this morning, our 30 percent chance of scattered showers has turned into a torrential downpour. Little more than a generation ago you would not have even thought of planting corn before the first of May. But today, most farmers shoot to be done planting corn before the calendar turns to May.

Every town, every business, every person has a story; a beginning, a middle and an end. As I think of Galesburg's founding fathers, they built the town of Galesburg with the core ideals of religion, education, hard work, and community.

Wendel Hunigan was one of four CSC teachers honored at the L.U.L.A.C. with a retirement party last Friday. Wendell has taught close to 9,000 students during his time at Carl Sandburg College, teaching local students sociology and anthropology, and was one of about eight instructors at CSC who began their tenure working out of a trailer.

Have you noticed that I love to write? It is a therapy that has sustained my mental strength for these many years. In honor of all Mothers and in celebration of Mother's Day, May 11, I would like to share a tribute that I wrote over sixteen years ago, a few days before my Mom's death.

This year is the 30th anniversary of one of my favorite albums of all time - Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy" album. I bought it when I was 15 and I've always considered it a masterpiece of its time. It was one of those albums you could put on the old turntable and listen to it straight through.

I am not sure that we are truly a "grown-up" until we have children. Part of this is because we do not become responsible for another human being until that moment.
